Laboratory of Materials Physics (LaFiM) — Federal University of Maranhão

Materials Physics under Extreme Conditions

Research

From atomic structure to material function.

LaFiM investigates the relationship between composition, crystal structure and the physical properties of inorganic materials, from the synthesis of micro- and nanostructures to the behaviour of the solid under extreme conditions of pressure and temperature.

The group maintains national and international collaborations and its own infrastructure for materials synthesis and preparation, training researchers at the undergraduate research, master's, doctoral and postdoctoral levels.

01

Synthesis and Characterization of Inorganic Materials

Development of micro- and nanostructured inorganic materials, with emphasis on transition metal oxides, including molybdates, tungstates and vanadates. We investigate the relationship between composition, crystal structure, morphology and physical properties through a range of experimental techniques.

02

Materials under Extreme Conditions

Investigation of the structural stability and physical properties of materials subjected to extreme conditions of pressure and temperature. The studies address phase transitions, polymorphism, amorphization, compressibility, thermal expansion and lattice dynamics, including in situ experiments.

03

Physical Properties and Functional Materials

Investigation of the relationships between structure and the optical, vibrational, electrical and functional properties of inorganic materials, seeking to understand and explore their potential for applications in sensors, energy, photocatalysis and environmental technologies.
