Mission

The Laboratory of Materials Physics (LaFiM) has as its mission to develop scientific research in Condensed Matter Physics and Materials Science, contributing to the understanding of the relationships between structure, composition, dimensionality and the physical properties of materials.

The laboratory works on the synthesis and study of inorganic materials, with emphasis on functional micro- and nanostructures and on the investigation of their behaviour under extreme conditions of pressure and temperature. Its activities seek to integrate fundamental research, materials development and applications of scientific and technological interest.

LaFiM also has as its mission to contribute to the training of human resources, involving undergraduate research, master's, doctoral and postdoctoral students in its research activities and promoting their integration with national and international research groups and centres.

History

The Laboratory of Materials Physics (LaFiM) was created in 2023, at the Centre of Exact and Technological Sciences of the Federal University of Maranhão (UFMA), in São Luís, under the coordination of Prof. Dr. João Victor Barbosa Moura.

It was created to establish an environment dedicated to the development of experimental research in Materials Physics and to the training of undergraduate and graduate students. Since then, LaFiM has been consolidating its activities mainly in the study of micro- and nanostructured inorganic materials, their physical properties and their response to extreme conditions.

The research carried out by the group covers the synthesis of functional materials, the study of their structural and vibrational properties and the investigation of phase transitions induced by pressure and temperature, using different experimental techniques available at UFMA and at partner institutions. These activities are complemented by experiments performed at large scientific facilities, including national and international synchrotron light sources.

This trajectory has allowed LaFiM to establish a growing network of scientific collaborations in Brazil and abroad, to expand the training of human resources and to contribute to the development of Materials Physics research at UFMA.

Although formally created in 2023, LaFiM brings together and consolidates an earlier trajectory of research on inorganic materials, spectroscopy, phase transitions and extreme conditions, establishing at UFMA a space dedicated to the experimental investigation of materials and to the training of new researchers.
